University College London Hospital (UCLH)

 

The project consisted of the internal refurbishment of the existing Queen Square Theatres building, which remained operational and occupied throughout.

Works consisted of the strip-out of the existing Bernard Sunley ward on Level 2 of Chandler Wing and refurbishment of 2 new operating theatres and ancillary spaces.

This included the provision of new plant to serve the space located on a raised deck externally.

The existing 4-theatre complex on Level 1 was refurbished in its existing configuration with elements of major alteration to provide an enlarged recovery space.

 

 

Project Highlights:

 

  • We have successfully handed over a multiple phased project at the University College London Hospital. The refurbishment healthcare works were completed whilst maintaining the ongoing running of the live hospital. It was split over 4 phases.
    Phase 1 consisted of new M&E services 2 new theatres, sluice rooms, clean utility room, dirty utility room, anaesthetic room, shower/toilets/changing area, reception, back of house office and new external plant deck.
    Phase 2 consisted of new M&E services 2 new theatres, sluice rooms, clean utility room, dirty utility room, anaesthetic room, reception and new HDU room (high dependency unit)
    phase 3 consisted of new M&E services 2 new theatres, sluice rooms, clean utility room, dirty utility room, anaesthetic room, shower/toilets/changing area and store areas.
  • Phase 4 was introduced after the first 3 phases were complete this phase consisted of refurbishment and fire line compartmentation remedial works to meet most current Trust and HTM regulations. It was split into 3 areas which were as below: –
    SITU (surgical intensive care unit)
    MITU (medical intensive care unit)
    HDU (High dependency unit)
  • Although the works were zoned off from the live areas of the hospital all M&E systems had to be integrated to the existing systems including main LV infrastructure, Fire alarm, IPS/UPS systems, access control, BEMS, nurse call, emergency lighting, medical gases, LTHW, New AHU to new formed plant deck and AHU replacements to plant room, 2 no. 300kw external chiller units to the roof which required a crane lift and road closures, ventilation and operating equipment which included all operating lighting, surgical pendants and Monitoring screens.
  • Throughout the project from pre-construction to construction we manged the site quality and control with quality assurance check sheets.
  • We used BIM level 2 to coordinate the install of the M&E services in heavily congested plant areas and above ceilings.
  • We ensured our contracts team understood and were familiar with the current technical standards including the HTM’s.
  • The extensive commissioning process was managed by our team from the early production of a commissioning programme, method statements from our supply chain, phasing and sequencing of commissioning, interfacing to existing systems, safe method of work, the production of O&M manuals and as-installed drawings.
